British Airways

British Airways improves takeoff punctuality using Sysnet mobile solution powered by MyScript

British Airways is the UK’s leading international carrier, flying to over 550 destinations around the world.

Challenge: Reduce turnaround time and improve punctuality

In order to meet CAA regulations, British Airways follows strict standard operating procedures to ensure that critical safety tasks are achieved and completed correctly.

Before the aircraft is authorized to take off, a strict load control process is carried out to ensure that each aircraft is neither over-loaded nor out of balance.

At Heathrow and Gatwick airports, one of the turnaround coordinator’s duties is to supervise the aircraft loading and fill in a load sheet with crucial information. This was usually done on the aircraft side using traditional pen and paper.

The information collated during loading was sent by fax or by phone to the Centralized Load Control (CLC) Center for checking and approval and the paper-based document was archived. Unfortunately, this process was time-consuming and risks causing delays.

Sysnet digital pen solution for aircraft load control

Sysnet worked closely with British Airways to develop a solution for aircraft load control that reduces turnaround time significantly and improves punctuality.

Sysnet flexible mobile solution for centralized load control is based on:

  • Digital pen and paper for data capture,
  • E50 Nokia handset for data transmission (PGC Mail),
  • MyScript technology including:
    • MyScript Builder Embedded integrated into the mobile handset for real-time handwriting recognition,
    • a set of business-specific lexicons such as acronyms to provide highly accurate results.
  • A Central Loading Control web portal.

Benefits

  • Greater efficiency
  • Ease of use
  • Truly mobile solution
  • High security

“In addition to the user-friendly, robust and highly mobile nature of the solution itself, the instant feedback that the handset gives to the turn-round coordinator is a really useful feature."

"It provides certainty that the information has been transmitted properly - in an area where such certainty is an absolute 'Must' for BA.”

Neil Clark - Head of IT - Airline Operations, British Airways Information Management
