What are MyScript Studio and Studio Notes Edition?

MyScript Studio is a document management system for the efficient organization of your handwritten notes. Use it to classify, search and navigate through your notes.

MyScript Studio Notes Edition combines the useful features of Studio with industry-standard handwriting recognition, to convert handwritten notes, shapes, tables and drawings into digital information ready for further use. You can use it with most major digital pen-and-paper systems, or writing devices such as touch screens, graphic tablets, or handwriting capture devices.

How do I buy a MyScript Studio product?

Please go there for the current prices and special offers.
If you have been using a trial version of the product, you don't need to download the software again. Once you have been purchased your MyScript Studio license, you will receive a special activation code. Open your trial version and ask to activate the product: you will be guided through the activation procedure that happens directly, online. Just give your code and confirm. You can now use your MyScript product indefinitely.

What types of files can I open with MyScript Studio?

Note: some device manufacturers offer their own version of MyScript Studio Notes Edition which may have a specific list of supported formats. Check the types of files you can open by using File - Open and looking in the file type list in the dialog box.

Which devices are compatible with MyScript Studio?

The actual types of ink files you can recognize may vary depending on whether you acquired a specific version of MyScript accompanying a particular device (e.g. Anoto-type digital pen, ACECAD Digimemo, Pegasus Note Taker etc.). I currently use an older version of MyScript Notes – can I upgrade?

There is currently a special offer for users of MyScript Notes 2.2 who wish to upgrade to the MyScript Studio range. Older versions of MyScript Notes no longer qualify for any upgrades.

General MyScript questions

 

I have some handwritten paper documents that I want to scan and convert: can I use MyScript Studio for this?

No. This is because of the fundamental difference between OCR/ICR and MyScript recognition.

There are 2 main ways to recognize writing: OCR and “dynamic” recognition, which is used by MyScript Notes.

Traditional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) works with bitmap images from scanned documents. When the source is handwriting, this is known as ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition). These images contain no information about how the text was written, only a visual representation.

On the other hand, MyScript is designed to recognize writing captured by a digital pen, or a writing capture device or a graphics tablet. These devices gather information on how the text was written and this information is used for text recognition. There is no scanning process or images involved.

MyScript is not OCR. The source data is not the same and the recognition algorithms are also different. Our MyScript recognition system is incompatible with OCR type recognition.

I need to change computers but I cannot find my registration key/activation code: what can I do?

It depends on how you acquired your licence.
If you purchased your application on our webstore, just contact Vision Objects customer services at http://vo-downloads.com/supportmyscript/ and we will send you another copy of your key.
If you bought your copy of the software from another vendor, contact them to ask for a replacement key. However be aware that if your key was on the packaging and you did not keep it in a safe place, we will not be able to replace it.

People say my writing is impossible to read. How can MyScript convert it?

You would be surprised at what it can recognize. However, the recognition software is sensitive to certain difficulties. It is more likely to produce errors if your words and letters are spaced unevenly. It may produce errors if words have letters missing or are badly spelled. You do not need to change your whole way of writing, but a little care may make a big difference in your recognition results. Use the personal dictionary to add unusual words, acronyms and abbreviations and you will see how recognition of them immediately improves.

Can I train MyScript to better recognize my writing?

Yes, but often it is unnecessary. You can use the MyScript Trainer feature to create a custom handwriting profile, which may help MyScript recognize your individual handwriting style. However, keep in mind that a handwriting profile significantly improves recognition accuracy only if you have an unusual style or if you form some letters in an atypical fashion.
You can improve recognition by using the personal dictionary, spacing your text well, and keeping lines horizontal.

Can MyScript interpret maths equations?

No, MyScript does not recognize mathematical or chemical symbols except the most basic symbols. For example, in English language it recognizes the following numbers and symbols:

We do not recommend that you use it for recognizing complex equations. This is not currently supported even by the most advanced technology. (It should recognize very basic operations such as 2+2=4 but nothing with sub and superscript for example)

Can I export directly to Excel or PowerPoint?

Currently, no. You can however copy and paste converted text from the MyScript window into another application. Select the text and use the Ctrl+C shortcut.

Can I export to Lotus Notes?

No, the current version does not guarantee export capability to Lotus Notes.

Using MyScript Studio/Notes

 

Previously I used MyScript Notes 2: when I import those notes into MyScript Studio, a message asks me if I want to update the file to the latest format. What should I do?

MyScript Studio uses a new type of .notes file format. If you will no longer be using MyScript Notes 2.x, you can accept the format update. However if you wish to continue using your .notes files with MyScript Notes 2.x, do NOT accept the file update! The new file format is not supported by MyScript Notes 2.x.

My surname/company name/abbreviations are always wrongly recognized. How can I fix this?

Do not hesitate to use the personal dictionary. If you add to it terms and words that you commonly use, you will increase the chances of these words being correctly recognized. This is especially the case with proper names, terms, company names, business terminology and so on.

Can I replace acronyms or initials by other words automatically?

You can add an auto replacement if you frequently use abbreviations or acronyms. In the converted text, the short form will be replaced by the long form you specify (for example, always replace JB by Jim Brown).

Is it important to set the global conversion settings?

The Global Conversion Settings help MyScript Studio to determine what the content of your document is, improving the recognition accuracy. If you have only text, specify in the settings that the content type is only text: if you have graphics, you should add shapes of freehand drawings to the content type. For more details, please consult the application help.

I don't quite understand how to edit results that contain graphics.

When you convert a document that contains both text and graphics, the results display the portions of text in text boxes. To edit parts of the text, click the word in question: it will appear in a small dialog box. Edit the text and confirm. If your document does not contain any graphics, it would be best to specify this in the global conversion settings, so your results appear in rich text like in a text editor.

I have some text written in another language/writing style/isolated shapes in the middle of my document: how can I convert this?

You can contain it in a special content area: click the Special Content Area button (from the control panel at the bottom of the window).  Select the section with different content and define the appropriate settings (language, style, content) in the dialog box that opens, and confirm. The settings will take effect at the next conversion.

There is a section in my notes that I don't want to convert; how can I exclude that section?

Activate the Special Content Area button (from the control panel at the bottom of the window).  Select the section you want to exclude and in the settings dialog box that opens, deactivate all the Content Type options and confirm. That section will be excluded from the next conversion.

Can I still edit ink in MyScript Studio? Where are the ink editing tools now?

The ink editing tools are still available, but they are hidden. To reveal them, click the Start ink editing icon just above the handwritten document. When you have finished, click the Stop ink editing icon (this confirms your changes).

My notes contain a lot of bulleted and numbered lists: will these be converted?

Yes they are recognized, if the bullets stand out clearly from the following text. However they will not be visible if you export to a plain text file.

Creating a personal writing profile

 

Can I train MyScript to better recognize my handwriting?

Yes: the MyScript Trainer feature is part of MyScript Studio Notes Edition or MyScript Notes, for creating a personal writing profile, to help increase the accuracy of the handwriting recognition for an individual’s writing. However it works best for writers who form their letters in an unusual way or who have an unusual writing style (rather than just “bad handwriting”!). In Studio, you can access it through the global conversion settings ("Change conversion profile" button).

When I try to create my handwriting profile, it seems to get stuck before the end of the profile creation. What can I do?

This happens on some versions in Windows Vista. To correct it, turn off the User Account Control function while you create the profile (Control Panel – User Accounts – Turn User Account Control on or off – you may need to reboot the PC). You can reactivate it once the profile has been created.
