The MyScript Notes application
What is MyScript Notes?
MyScript Notes is a Windows application that can convert handwirtten
notes, shapes, tables and drawings into digital information ready for
further use. You can use it with most major digital pen-and-paper
systems, or writing devices such as graphic tablets, or handwriting
capture devices.

What is MyScript Notes Lite?
MyScript Notes Lite is an abridged version of MyScript Notes. It does
not include several useful features of the full version, for example,
you cannot convert shapes, tables or drawings, your personal dictionary
is limited to only 30 words, and you do not have the MyScript Trainer
personal handwriting profile application.
MyScript Notes Lite is supported by Pegasus, in case of licence key
issue please contact PegaTech

I tried out MyScript Notes and have decided to buy it -
what do I do?
No, you
don't need to download the software again. Once you have been purchased
your MyScript Notes licence, you will receive a product key for MyScript
Notes. Open your trial version of MyScript Notes and you will see the
product registration box. Type the product key into this box and confirm.
You can now use your copy of MyScript Notes indefinitely.

What types of files
can I open with MyScript Notes?
This
depends on how you acquired MyScript Notes: some device manufacturers
offer their own version which may have a specific list of supported
formats. However, the version purchased from the Vision Objects
web store supports the following (device and file format):
Logitech IO & IO2 Digital Pen (.pen)
Nokia SU-1B & SU-27W Digital Pens (.pgd & .pgc)
Maxell Digital Pen (.pgd & .pgc)
ACECAD DigiMemo (.dhw)
Pegasus NoteTaker (.pnt)
iRex iLiad (.irx)
Digital Ink Pad (.top)
Genius G-Note 7000 (.top)
Sony Ericsson Chatpen (.svg)
IBM Crosspad (.ps)
MyScript Notes native format (.notes)
Through the Ink Editor in the User Interface:
Graphic Tablets
Tablet PCs
Check the types of files you can open by using File - Open and
looking in the file type list in the dialog box.
Which devices are compatible with MyScript Notes?
The
actual types of ink files you can recognize may vary depending
on whether you acquired a specific version of MyScript Notes
accompanying a particular device (e.g. Logitech iO pen, ACECAD
Digimemo, Pegasus Note Taker etc.). See the previous
point for a list of currently supported devices for the
version purchased from the Vision Objects web store.
It can also accept ink made with the Ink Editor on Tablet PC
and any Windows 2000 or XP touchscreen. You can check which
ink files can be used by clicking the Open tool button and checking
the file types listed in the drop-down list in the Open dialog
box.

I
have some handwritten paper documents that I want to scan and
convert: can I use MyScript Notes for this?
No.
This is because of the fundamental difference between OCR/ICR
and MyScript recognition.
There
are 2 main ways to recognize writing: OCR and “dynamic” recognition,
which is used by MyScript Notes.
Traditional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) works with
bitmap images from scanned documents. When the source is handwriting
this is known as ICR, or Intelligent Character Recognition.
These images contain no information about how the text was written;
it is only a visual representation.
On the other hand, MyScript Notes is designed to recognize
writing captured by a digital pen, or a writing capture device
or a graphics tablet. These devices gather information on how
the text was written and this information is used for text recognition.
There is no scanning process or images involved.
MyScript
Notes is not OCR.
The source data is not the same and the recognition algorithms
are also different. Our MyScript recognition system is incompatible
with OCR type recognition.

Installation troubleshooting
I have installed the Japanese version of MyScript Notes on my English Windows. I
am having display problems in the application: what is going wrong?
This problem
may occur if you do not have Windows set up to accept Asian fonts (which can
happen even if you have an Asian font installed). To fix this problem, follow
these steps:
-
Open the
Windows Control Panel.
-
Go to the
Regional and Language Options (this might also be called Date, Time,
Language and Regional Options depending on your view)
-
Depending
on your view, you might have to click the Regional and Language Options icon.
-
Under the
Languages tab, activate the Install files for East Asian languages check box
and click OK to confirm.
Another display
problem may occur if you do not have the appropriate input language activated in
Windows. Here too, you may have to change the regional settings in Windows
before installing (or re-installing) MyScript Notes.
-
Open the
Windows Control Panel.
-
Go to the
Regional and Language Options (this might also be called Date, Time,
Language and Regional Options depending on your view)
-
Depending
on your view, you might have to click the Regional and Language Options icon.
-
Under the
Advanced tab, go to the Language for non-Unicode programs frame and choose
Japanese or Chinese (PRC) from the drop-down list: click OK to confirm.
One of these
two workarounds should solve any Asian font display problems you are having.

Can I install MyScript Notes on a Macintosh?
While
MyScript Notes does not currently exist in a version for Mac, some
customers have successfully used it on a Virtual PC setup on Macintosh
(with a Mac running OS X and the Virtual PC using Windows XP).

If I log in under a different name, I can't seem to open MyScript Notes
- why not?
MyScript Notes licenses are for a single user. They are linked to your
Windows account. So another user cannot use your copy of MyScript Notes
if a different log in name is used.

My hard disk crashed and I have lost my registration key for MyScript
Notes - what can I do?
Just
contact
Vision Objects customer service and we will locate your registration
details and send you another copy of your key. If you bought your copy
of the software from another vendor, contact them to ask for a
replacement key.

I have an IBM CrossPad and Windows
XP. I am not able to upload my data from the pad. How can I get my data
into MyScript Notes?
You can
open postscript files (*.ps) with MyScript Notes. While the IBM Crosspad
software cannot save its ink file (*.nbk) directly as a postscript file
(*.ps), you could try downloading the "Ink Manager Pro software" from
the IBM website ; this tool will allow you to save your ink files as a
postscript file. The information given on this web page is that the
software is compatible with Windows 98-2000, but nothing seems to
indicate that it will not work with your Windows XP too.
Here
is the download URL:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=LWIK-3ZYMR5
Please
note that we have not actually used this solution, but in theory it
works. VisionObjects assumes no responsibility for external web sites or
third-party products.

Note conversion
My document contains only text: which conversion mode should I use?
Rich Text mode
converts only text: it cannot handle tables or shapes or freehand drawings. Any
elements like this that appear in the document will be treated as text. In Rich
Text mode you can add much more formatting to your text directly in the MyScript
Notes window: it works like a rich text editor. You can add bullets, change the
text size, add bold, italics or underlining, change the text colour etc.
If my document contains shapes and drawings, can I use Rich Text mode?
We recommend
that you only use Graphics and Text mode if your document contains several
shapes or diagrams or drawings. The Graphics and Text mode converts any
geometrical shapes or tables or freehand drawings that are in your document.
These items cannot be converted in Rich Text mode.
I don't quite understand how to edit text converted in Graphics & Text mode.
Editing in this
mode is not as easy as in Rich Text mode: click the text that you want to edit
and that line of text appears in a box, where you can modify the text.
How do I change the mode used for converting text?
You change the
text mode in the Global Conversion Settings dialog box. If you want to use a
different mode for just a portion of the document, create a conversion area.
I have some text written in another language/isolated shapes in the middle of my
document: how can I convert this?
Create a
conversion area: make sure that the Add Conversion Area tool is active (this is
active by default on the toolbar). Drag around the area that you want to specify:
a dialog box appears in which you need to define the conversion options that
will apply just to that area (i.e. a different language or style). When you
start the conversion process, that area will be converted with the parameters
you defined.
I have noticed that sometimes two single words have been joined together in the
conversion result. How can I avoid this?
Try simply
spacing words more clearly when you write. Otherwise, if the two words are not
common words, you can add them to the personal dictionary which will help with
correct recognition.
There is a section in my notes that I don't want to convert; how can I exclude
that section?
To exclude some
notes from conversion, make sure the Add Conversion Area tool button is active
and select the portion to exclude. In the dialog box, choose the Ignore option
for the selected area. When you make your conversion, that part of the ink will
be ignored.
Why are my notes converted automatically without giving me the chance to alter
the settings used?
If you want to
change the conversion settings before conversion, open the Global Conversion
Settings dialog box (Conversion - Conversion Settings). If you want to see the
settings every time you convert a file, make sure the Show this dialog box
before each conversion option is ticked at the bottom of this dialog box.
If I have a diagram in the middle of my document, can I still use Rich Text
mode?
Create a
conversion area around your diagram. Then the diagram will be converted in
Graphics & Text mode but you can still convert the rest in Rich Text, using the
Global Conversion Settings.
Can MyScript Notes interpret maths equations?
Not at the
current time, although it can recognize numbers and some basic mathematical
symbols (+, -, x etc).
Can I export directly to Excel or PowerPoint?
Currently, no.
You can however copy and paste converted text from the MyScript Notes window
into another application. Select the text and use the Ctrl+C shortcut.
Can I export to Lotus Notes?
Yes,
MyScript Notes is specially configured to work with Lotus Notes when you
wish to export mail.
Editing ink
Can you change the ink in the handwriting file?
Yes you can,
with the MyScript Editor. This is an ink editor that shows you a graphic image
of the ink that your pen or tablet has captured. You can modify the ink before
conversion if you want to delete some sections, or remove some erroneous text or
move some text on the page. Once you have changed the ink, click the Update
button so MyScript Notes can take your changes into account.
I have some scribbled out text in my ink file. How can I remove that?
Open your file
in the Ink Editor and activate the Eraser tool. Rub out the scribbled text. If
you need to move any text around once you have deleted some of it, select it
with the Selector or Lasso tool and drag the selection to move it. Click the
Update button to refresh the file and return to MyScript Notes for conversion.
Can I copy and paste pieces of handwriting?
In MyScript
Editor you can copy and paste ink within a document or from one page to another,
copying it into the Windows clipboard (Ctrl + C) and then opening another ink
file in the editor and pasting in the copied text (Ctrl + V).
I changed some ink in the MyScript Editor, but I don't want to keep the changes
I made. Do I have to update the file?
If you decide
not to keep changes you have made in MyScript Editor, close the editor window
without clicking the Update button and confirm that you want to discard your
changes.
Formatting text
Can I highlight text with colour?
You can
highlight text converted in Rich Text mode with different colours, but you need
to add the highlighting in the Ink Editor before the conversion. Open the page
of notes in the Ink Editor (Conversion - Ink Editor). Activate the Highlighter
tool button and drag over the text you wish to highlight. Close the Ink Editor,
clicking the Update button to take into account your changes. Once you convert
this text, the highlighting you added will appear on the converted digital text.
This highlighting will stay with the text if you then export it to Word as a
document.
I like highlighting text but can I change the pen colour?
If you like,
you can change the highlighter colour or the pen width: in the Ink Editor, click
the small arrow to the right of the Highlighter tool button: activate the pen
colour and width that you require and then use the pen.
I highlighted some text in the Ink Editor but the highlighting disappeared
during conversion.
You have no
doubt converted in Graphics and Text mode instead of Rich Text. Highlighting can
only be retained in Rich Text.
My notes contain a lot of bulleted lists: will these be converted?
Yes, in Rich
Text mode MyScript Notes can recognize bullets if they use one of these
characters:
I added bullets but when I exported as a text file they disappeared.
This is quite
normal: the plain text format does not support bullets. Bullets will be retained
if you export as a Word document.
Languages and writing styles
What languages can I recognize?
The following
languages can currently be recognized by MyScript Notes: English (US and UK),
French, German, Russian, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish,
Chinese (Traditional & Simplified), Korean and Japanese.
Can I cross out mistakes as I write?
Avoid
scratching out or crossing over mistakes you make when you write with your pen:
it is tempting and we all do it with ordinary pen and paper, but as a digital or
capture tablet records all the ink strokes you make, your strikethroughs will
also be captured! MyScript Notes will assume that these extra strokes are text
and will try to convert them. It is a better idea to write the mistaken word
again and simply edit the final converted text directly in MyScript Notes.
I have very slanted writing: will this affect conversion?
If you have
handwriting that is excessively slanted you may find that this causes problems
with the recognition result. MyScript Notes cannot manage handwriting that is
overly slanted: you could try creating an adaptation profile if your version
includes MyScript Trainer. This may help with recognition.
People say my writing is impossible to read. How can MyScript Notes convert it?
You would be
surprised at what it can recognize. However, the recognition software is
sensitive to certain types of handwriting problems. It is more likely to produce
errors if your words and letters are spaced unevenly. It may produce errors if
words have letters missing or are badly spelled. You do not need to change your
whole way of writing, but a little care may make a big difference in your
recognition results.
Personal dictionary
When I write my company name, it is never recognized. Can I solve this?
Do not hesitate
to use the personal dictionary. If you add to it terms and words that you
commonly use, you will increase the chances of these words being correctly
recognized. This is especially the case with proper names, terms, company names,
business terminology and so on.
Can I replace acronyms or initials by other words automatically?
You can also
add an auto replacement if you frequently use abbreviations or acronyms. In the
converted text, the short form will be replaced by the long form you specify
(for example, always replace JB by Jim Brown).
Training MyScript Notes
What does the MyScript Trainer program do?
This program
can help train MyScript Notes to recognize your individual handwriting style.
You will find that using a handwriting profile will significantly improve
recognition accuracy if you have an unusual style or if you form some letters in
an atypical fashion.
Does MyScript Notes perform continuous training as I write, to better recognize
my handwriting?
No, it uses a
different method. MyScript Notes has already been trained with thousands of
different handwriting samples for maximum versatility. If you have an unusual
writing style and you find that you have consistently poor results, you can
create an individual recognition profile in the MyScript Trainer program.
When I try to do the MyScript Trainer program, I cannot get the correct amount
of valid characters for the program to create my profile. What am I doing wrong?
Check the
following tips:
-
Are you
sure that you copied the whole list of samples? If you left some out, the
results will be poor.
-
Make sure
that you copied out both the alphabets and the symbols twice.
-
If you have
crossed out too many things, the results will be poor (try correcting the
ink in the MyScript Ink Editor before submitting the samples for training).
-
You have
missed out some parts of your training samples when you uploaded the file.
Check that the samples in the file are complete in the Trainer window.
