MyScript Calculator Sweeps the Table at 2013 Mobile Apps Showdown!

The Mobile Apps Showdown at the 2013 International CES was a French affair this year. For the online vote, the MyScript Calculator by Vision Objects (Nantes, France) dominated from the start, and was the winner by a large margin. In the live event, Vision Objects gave the first demo, and they had the packed crowd gasping as the handwriting recognition in the calculator analyzed increasingly complex equations. It may sound like a demo of grass growing, but in fact Vision Objects gave one of the all-time best demos at Mobile Apps. The Mobile Apps Showdown live event was hosted by Jon Hein and Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate, co-hosts of The Wrap Up Show on the Howard Stern channels on SiriusXM Radio. They brought their inimitable wit and knowledge of all things geek to the festivities. After the Vision Objects demo at the top of the show, the table was set, and the remaining nine companies, all with strong products, tried to best them. We had Elvis, we had “Jay Leno” exposed by NIVPAT’s amazing pattern recognition, we had a Swype demo in which the presenter was dressed as a huge foam finger, we had push ups and sit ups (Runtastic) and dating (iMeet) and travel (Sales Navigator) and several attempts at the iconic Brooklyn accent. FindIt, another early stage startup, showed their game. The SecuraTrac demo featured a fall that was detected and assisted remotely. MindMeld showed an amazing app that lets you link to the real world from a conversation. Unified Intents, a two-person start-up, showed an app that lets you use your android phone as a remote control. Great products and demos, but none topped Vision Objects, and In the live voting MyScript Calculator won handily. This is the first time in either Last Gadget Standing or Mobile Apps Showdown that a company has won both the online and live voting. Congrats to Vision Objects.

Taking Notes on Your #iPad - Handwriting Recognition

ou’ve read of those that say, "Yeah man, I don’t carry a keyboard with my iPad. That’s not what a tablet is for man. Go use a laptop or something if you want retro keyboard input!" Perhaps that’s a bit of a exaggeration. As much as I love my keyboard, being able to switch from handwriting to text on an iPad would be pretty neat. I hadn’t given it much thought until a friend called me up and asked if it was do-able...

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 review

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 expands the original 5.3in. Galaxy Note to a standard tablet size, presumably in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. When it works well, the S Pen functionality is impressive and reliable. However, we’d like to see more emphasis on handwriting recognition — for example, the ability to write emails onto the screen and a handwriting module in the keyboard. The quad-core processor can surely handle this, and we’ll be looking for it in the next-generation Note device.
